Celebrating Golden Retriever Day

February 3rd is National Golden Retriever Day! While we love all of our canine companions, Goldens truly are precious. These lovable pups are not only absolutely adorable, they are also very smart and trainable, and just make wonderful pets. A Marietta, GA vet discusses the beloved breed below.

Popularity

Goldens consistently rank at or near the top of the lists of our favorite breeds. Here in Georgia, they were almost our state dog! In 1991, Fido bounded onto a bill that would have made him our official mascot. Devout Bulldog fans were not happy about the choice, and the bill was voted down. It all turned out fine, though: in 2018, we made ‘adoptable dogs’ our state mascot. One may say that the Golden won after all, as he is very adoptable.

Temperament

As you may know, Goldens have a reputation for being extremely friendly and lovable, and have a way of charming the socks off anyone they meet. They are very active, and love to run and play. Because they’re so trainable and eager to please, they are often used as working dogs. Active and curious, these pretty pups love adventures, belly rubs, and playing. They are also very fond of swimming. (That really isn’t a surprise, given that the breed was originally developed to retrieve game and fowl.)

Breed Info

There are actually three different kinds of Goldens: British, American, and Canadian. They also have three distinct colors: golden, light golden, and dark golden. Of course, they’re all pretty adorable, in our book!

History

We can thank a Scottish noble called Sir Dudley Marjoribanks for all the smiles, cuddles, and tail wags these lovable pooches offer us. He created the breed back in the 1800’s by crossing Flat-Coated Retrievers and Tweed Water Spaniels. Fido’s family tree also includes the Red Setter, Bloodhound, and Labrador Retriever.

Celebrating

February 3rd also happens to be Doggy Date Night. So, how would one celebrate this special occasion? Fido definitely deserves a special treat, and perhaps a new toy. A fun play session will also get that cute tail going. For the night’s entertainment, pick a movie that features a Golden. There are some great ones to choose from, including Homeward Bound, Air Bud, A Dog’s Purpose, and The Retrievers.
