Creating a Cat-Friendly Home

May 1, 2018
Cats have a special way of making houses into homes. While our feline pals have an amazing ability to get comfortable in almost any space, from a tiny apartment to a huge mansion, they always do benefit from having some things that suit their specific needs. Here, a local Marietta, GA vet offers advice on making a kitty-friendly home.

Vertical Space

As you may have noticed, many of our feline buddies like high spaces. This does make sense: cats really don’t have a great vantage point from ground level. In the wild, Fluffy likes to climb trees to get a better view of her kingdom. Offer your furball a cat tower, or perhaps some kitty shelves.

Window Views

Kitties may love to lounge around and relax, but they do need some form of entertainment. A window view is a great option. Fluffy also enjoys watching fishtanks. However, if you get a fishtank, make sure your feline pal can’t get too close to it, or worse, jump into it!

Nail Care Stations

Kitties have a very deep-seated, instinctive urge to scratch. Make sure to provide Fluffy with a suitable manicure station. Cat towers are great, but you can also offer your pet a scratching post or board. Just be sure to choose something sturdy, so it won’t wobble. Cats don’t like shaky scratching posts! If you are working with a tight budget, go the DIY route and make a cat tower out of PVC pipe, a stepladder, or a bookcase.

Hiding Spots

Kitties often feel safe and secure in small, enclosed spaces. Make sure Fluffy has lots of places to explore and curl up in. This can be a pet tent or condo, or just a spot behind a couch or under the bed. You can also put cat beds under end tables or in little nooks and crannies. This will also help shy cats feel safer.

Facilities

Kitties prefer clean litterboxes, and who can blame them? Make sure to keep your pet’s purrsonal powder room nice and clean. If you have more than one furball, you’ll need one box per feline, plus at least one extra. Litterboxes don’t do much for one’s décor, of course. Look online for some great ideas for hiding Fluffy’s bathroom. Please contact us, your Marietta, GA pet hospital, for all your cat’s veterinary care needs. We are here to help!
