DIY Scratching Posts For Fluffy

Has your kitty been using your sofa as a nail-care station? Is Fluffy ignoring that expensive cat tower you got her, and scratching your carpet instead? Instead of spending money on expensive kitty furniture, why not make your furball’s next nail-care station? This is also a great option for people who just enjoy making things. A Marietta, GA vet offers some great DIY scratching posts below.

Stepladder Hack

You can ‘repurrpose’ an old stepladder for your feline buddy. Add some smooth boards to the steps to make kitty lounging spots. Then, cover the whole thing in carpet or sisal rope. This also works with metal storage racks and bookshelves.

On The Wall

This one is perfect for kitties that live in apartments, as it won’t take up much space. Simply glue a mat or carpet scrap to a smooth board. Then, nail it to the wall, just above your kitty’s head.

Traffic Cone

If you ever happen to find yourself in possession of a traffic cone, don’t toss it away! Wrap it in sisal rope, and tell your furry little diva not to scratch it. She may immediately start using it! You can even hang a kitty toy from the top.

PVC Pipe

PVC pipe can also come in very handy here. You’ll need some wood for the base. Trace the outline of the pipe onto the wood. Then, cut a circle in the wood to fit it. Insert the pipe into the wood, and use strong, non-toxic glue to secure it. When it’s dry, wrap it in sisal rope or carpet, using more glue to secure it. You can also experiment with different shapes and colors of rope. For example, to make Fluffy her own ‘cactus,’ add a few more pieces of pipe as limbs, and use green rope.

Tree

Are you up for a bit more of a challenge? Use an actual tree limb, and turn that into a cat tower. First, you’ll want to trim it to the size you want. Then, sand it down, and clean and disinfect it. You can use a solid piece of wood for the base. If you want, you can even wrap it in sisal rope.
